Welcome
The Political Science faculty welcomes you to its Department website. Established in 1896, our department is housed in Woodburn Hall located in the historic center of WVU’s downtown campus. One of the largest and most vibrant departments in the Eberly College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Political Science offers a comprehensive array of courses and learning opportunities leading to the B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in Political Science. Some of the highlights of its academic programs and learning opportunities beyond the classroom are:
- Pre-Law and Legal Studies
- American Politics, Policy, and Business
- International Relations, Comparative Politics, and National Security
- Debate Team and Model United Nations
- Study Abroad Programs in Political Science and Law
- Internships in West Virginia, American, and British Politics and Policy
- M.A. and Ph.D. Programs
Long recognized across the WVU campus for outstanding teaching, the research productivity of the faculty has been recognized in recent national and global rankings of Political Science Departments. With established scholars across the subfields of political science, undergraduate and graduate students are able to benefit from the faculty research expertise and professional activities. Enhancing these instructional and research opportunities are programs, institutes, and centers closely affiliated with the Department of Political Science: the International Studies Program and the Institute for Public Affairs.
If you are a prospective WVU student (or a current student on campus deciding on a major), we invite you to explore the sections about the Department, our faculty, curriculum, and opportunities beyond the classroom. If you are a current Political Science major, this website will keep you informed about new courses and faculty, advising procedures, updated pre-registration materials, and the application schedule for study abroad, Model U.N., and other Department events and opportunities.

New Pre-Law and International Law Study Abroad Program at the School of Law, University of Manchester, United Kingdom. The Department now has a partnership with the School of Law at the University of Manchester, United Kingdom. This program is ideal for students in the “pre-law and legal studies” area of emphasis with law courses in international law, ethics, philosophy, and British/European law and institutions. Also established are competitive scholarships to support WV resident students accepted to the program. Made possible by the generosity of prominent WVU alum, Curtis H. “Hank” Barnette, students receiving this scholarship will carry the title of Barnette Scholar at the University of Manchester. More information on this program (with links to the University of Manchester) can be found in our website’s section on study abroad in pre-law, comparative legal systems, and international law. Contact Professor Joe Hagan if you have immediate interests in the Manchester Program and the Barnette Scholars Program.
